Sexual Intercourse and Fibroids

Fibroidsare benign tumors that grow in or on the wall of the uterus and can interfere with sexual intercourse in a number of ways. These tumors, which are also known as uterine leiomyomas or myomas, are typically benign and often do not cause any symptoms.  Many women will develop fibroids of some size during their reproductive years – up to 80% of women by the age of menopause. African-American women are most likely to develop fibroids followed by those of Hispanic heritage and Asians. Fibroids can cause discomfort and pain during sex, as well as a feeling of fullness or pressure in the pelvic area. They can also cause abnormal bleeding and discharge, which can be unpleasant and make sexual activity unappealing. In some cases, fibroids can even cause the uterus to change shape, which can make sex difficult or impossible. It’s important to talk to your doctor if you have fibroids and are experiencing any problems with sex.

Pain during Intercourse

One way that fibroids can interfere with sexual intercourse is by causing pain during penetration. The tumors can press against the uterus and cause pain and discomfort, making it difficult for a person to relax and enjoy sex. This pain can be especially severe during deep penetration.

Narrowing of the Vagina

Another way that fibroids can interfere with sexual intercourse is by making the vagina narrower. As the fibroids grow, they can press against the walls of the vagina, making it more difficult for a penis or sex toy to enter. This can make sex less enjoyable and can even make it impossible to have penetrative sex.

Emotional Experience

In addition to causing physical discomfort, fibroids can also affect a person’s emotional well-being. The tumors can cause feelings of self-consciousness and embarrassment, which can make it difficult for a person to relax and enjoy sex. This can lead to a lack of desire and a decrease in sexual satisfaction. Because fibroids can also cause bloating and swelling, some women report that body image interferes with their sexual desire.

Other Issues

If a fibroid is growing near the cervix, intercourse can put pressure on the fibroid, causing anything from mild discomfort to acute pain. Another issue can be bleeding after sex. Fibroids can also cause extended menstrual periods with more bleeding. This can interfere with sexual activity as well.

Consult with your doctor

If you have fibroids and are experiencing discomfort or pain during sex, it’s important to talk to your doctor. Your doctor can help you determine the best course of treatment to alleviate your symptoms and improve your sexual health. Treatment options may include medications, uterine artery embolization, or surgery to remove the fibroids.  If you are experiencing discomfort or pain during sex, talk to your doctor to discuss treatment options.
